‘Tis the season for parties — and for upping your evening makeup game. “With all of your events, the holiday season is the perfect time to be a little bit bolder and take risks with your makeup,” says Lauren Andersen, Avon’s Celebrity Makeup Artist. So here’s our present to you: From glimmery metallics to a brilliant, jewel-toned eye to festive red lipstick, we’ve got gorgeous ways to sparkle and shine straight through New Year’s.

Strike a balance.

The golden rule of holiday makeup: Accentuate your lips or eyes, but never both at the same time. “You don’t need to enhance every single feature on your face,” says Lauren. “Just like with accessories, you have to figure out a balance with your makeup.” That means, if you do a smoky eye, go for a neutral lip. Bold lips? Tone down the eye makeup. “Ask yourself, ‘Do I want people to look at my eyes? Do I have a great smile or great cheekbones?” she says. “Figure out what you love best and then use makeup to accentuate that.”

Make it a metallic moment.

A wash of molten gold, silver, or pewter across your lids is party-ready and sexy. And the new Avon Mega Metals Cream Eyeshadows make it easy to get the look. “I love these metallic creams!” says Lauren. “You can wear them really sheer, layer them for a more pigmented look, or add a second, darker colour of shadow and create a smoky eye.” For a subtler take on metallics, try a silver or gold eyeliner worn with neural shadow. We love Avon Mega Metals Eyeliner in Gilded Metallic and Chrome Metallic.

Wow with jewel tones.

Sumptuous shades of emerald green, deep purple, and cobalt blue are rich, vibrant, and just right for holiday. “You can go all out and wear the colour all over the lid and smoked out underneath, or just blend a little at the outer corners,” says Lauren. To find your most flattering jewel tone, experiment! She recommends the Avon For The Love of Makeup Artist Palette. Not only is it stocked with 30 different eyeshadows (including tons of amazing jewel-tone shades), but it’s also got lip glosses, highlighters, blushes, and more. “It’s a huge, incredible collection and the shadows go on so pigmented,” says Lauren. “Apply them with a wet brush for more impact or use a dry brush for a softer look.”

Play with coloured eyeliner.

Not ready to wear a lid-full of blue or green shadow? Ease into the jewel-tone trend with a swoop of coloured eyeliner. “Liner lets you try a high-impact of colour with a low commitment level. It’s much easier to wear colour when you just have a little splash of it,” says Lauren, who suggests first blending a peach or neutral shadow all over the lid, then tracing a thin line of cobalt, emerald, plum, or bronze along the lashline. Try Avon Glimmersticks Eye Liner.

Have fun with festive lips.

If you’re opting for bold lipstick for the holiday party circuit, shelve the hot pinks and corals and look towards the red family instead. “I love the idea of going deeper with your lipstick shades, rather than super bright, at this time of year,” says Lauren. “I especially like classic red, cherry-apple red, deep berry, or wine lipstick for holiday.” Try Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Wild Cherry or Red Supreme. For a slightly more subtle effect, Avon True Color Lip Balm in Cherry Kiss, leaves behind a pretty, sheer red tint. Pro tip: When wearing a strong lipcolour, first fill in the lips with a lipliner like Avon Glimmersticks Lip Liner. This keeps the colour from bleeding and helps it last all through the night. (Not to mention through multiple sips of champagne!)
