Two years ago, Pinky Thomasson of Cameron, North Carolina, saw a birthday surprise — an Avon brochure dropped in her mailbox — as a sign to join the company. The best gift? Financial freedom, along with having time for her daughters, ages 8 and 10. “They’re Avon kids. One of them loves to colour her nails,” says Pinky, whose own mother was a Representative in the Philippines. “Since I joined the company, I just keep going,” Pinky says. “Building relationships continues to allow me to grow and help others at the same time. It makes me want to learn more, achieve more and deserve more as an independent woman.”
7 Questions with Pinky
Me, in a nutshell: I am independent.
I love running my own business because: I can create my own hours. As a military spouse with two young daughters, time is very important to me. I can stay home with my kids and still run my business if my husband needs to go overseas. I can attend important school functions with my children anytime they need me. In other words, I am in control.
I feel most beautiful when: I have accomplished something. Watching myself grow each day working with Avon is giving me the feeling that I am more beautiful than ever before.
Empowerment means: being a role model to someone.
The best piece of advice my mother gave me is: to stay strong and be courageous.
Friday night means: family time, typically out for dinner or at a movie.

Becoming a Representative one year ago was a natural transition for Yashira Rivera, of Puerto Rico. Though she was experienced in sales, her best preparation was that she was already a fan of the brand. “Avon attracted me because I was buying products from another person. I asked myself, what if I could sell them,” she says.
The decision fast-tracked Yashira toward success — a gift she now shares with her customers and colleagues. “The most significant change was that Avon gave me the tools to start my business quickly,” she says. “Avon innovates me completely. I have the best opportunity to interact and motivate.”

The best part of being my own boss is: I can challenge myself by establishing goals, choose the people who are going to work with me and have direct communication with my clients.
I feel most beautiful when: I feel comfortable and confident.
To me, empowerment means: the vision to affect positive change.
The best advice my mother gave me is: to be who you are; don’t be what others want you to be.
My guilty pleasure is: wine and chocolate.
